HARDWARE LATENCY COMPENSATION IN CLOSED-LOOP VISUOTACTILE FEEDBACK
ABSTRACT / SUMMARY
Benchmarking microsecond tactile deformation sampling against 120Hz vision streams for high-frequency robotic manipulation (Experiment 05).
01. Asynchronous Sensor Clocks
Autonomous physical manipulation requires balancing disparate sensory rates. High-resolution stereo vision cameras operate at 60Hz to 120Hz (8.3ms to 16.6ms frame intervals), whereas tactile shear forces slip within 2ms to 4ms. Relying strictly on visual feedback guarantees delayed grip compensation during slip events.
02. Optical Elastomeric Sensor Bench
In Experiment 05 (Visuotactile Sensor Fusion) supporting the Q-Embodi system, we built an experimental test rig utilizing internal optical elastomer shear tracking. Micro-markers embedded in silicone skin register local deformation vectors at 500Hz.

To bridge the temporal disparity between 120Hz vision frames and 500Hz tactile sampling, we deployed an extended Kalman filter (EKF) that forecasts friction cone boundaries 3 milliseconds into the future.

float shear_dx;
float shear_dy;
float normal_fz;
float friction_coefficient_est;
} TactileSample;
bool detect_incipient_slip(const TactileSample* s, float dt) {
float tangential_force = sqrtf(s->shear_dx * s->shear_dx + s->shear_dy * s->shear_dy);
float limit = s->normal_fz * s->friction_coefficient_est;
// Incipient slip occurs when tangential rate exceeds normal stabilization margin
return (tangential_force / limit) > 0.88f;
}04. Hardware Telemetry and Grasp Stability
Across 200 physical grasping trials on fragile, variable-mass specimens (acrylic cylinders, soft organic materials), the predictive slip controller prevented drops in 98.5% of induced vibration disturbances.

|---|---|---|---|
| Vision-Only (120Hz) | 18.4 ms | 26.2 ms | 64.0% |
| Reactive Tactile (500Hz) | 4.8 ms | 8.2 ms | 91.5% |
