RESEARCH NOTE
ELIMINATING HALLUCINATION IN DENSE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS VIA DETERMINISTIC AST GROUNDING
ABSTRACT / SUMMARY
Evaluating deterministic graph verification vs probabilistic extraction across 1,200 pages of aerospace airworthiness directives (Experiment 02).
01. The Safety Risk of Probabilistic LLMs
In aerospace engineering, maintenance regulations and airworthiness directives tolerate zero hallucination. A single misquoted torque tolerance or inspection interval can trigger structural failure. Probabilistic large language models, when ungrounded, exhibit semantic drift that appears plausible while containing inverted numerical bounds.
02. AST Syntax Tree Grounding
In Research Area 02 and Experiment 02, we constructed a deterministic Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) parser that parses regulatory manuals into typed mathematical propositions before querying. Every generative token prediction must resolve against a verified node in the AST graph.
interface DirectiveNode {
directiveId: string;
revision: number;
torqueToleranceNm: { min: number; max: number };
mandatoryIntervalHours: number;
}
function verifyExtraction(extracted: unknown, astGround: DirectiveNode): boolean {
const candidate = extracted as DirectiveNode;
return (
candidate.directiveId === astGround.directiveId &&
candidate.torqueToleranceNm.min >= astGround.torqueToleranceNm.min &&
candidate.torqueToleranceNm.max <= astGround.torqueToleranceNm.max &&
candidate.mandatoryIntervalHours === astGround.mandatoryIntervalHours
);
}03. Empirical Results Across 1,200 Pages
The AST verification pipeline demonstrated a 99.4% factual precision rate across tabular specifications and numerical compliance directives, reducing hallucinations to undetectable levels on structured pages.
| Test Corpus Segment | Ungrounded LLM Precision | Deterministic AST Precision |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Service Bulletins | 81.4% | 99.8% |
| Airworthiness Directives (ADs) | 74.2% | 99.4% |
| Component Schematics Tables | 68.9% | 99.2% |
| Multi-Column Scanned Footnotes | 52.1% | 87.1% |
04. The Footnote Parsing Frontier
Accuracy degraded to 87.1% on legacy scanned PDF footnotes where spatial parentage was obscured by OCR segment misordering. We are currently developing multi-modal layout tokenization to resolve spatial footnote anchoring.
